Flaming passions:In Flames Live In Beijing 2010

Nearly a decade ago, the Swedish band In Flames unleashed the death-metal storm whose currents swept the Asian music scene.

Their feverish sounds created a style for the era that had both anger and melancholy. The album The Jester Race, in 1995, took In Flames to their peak and marked a perfection of their style, characterized by the dominance of the guitar over vocals. It was that album that put the band on their tour and got Asian music fans interested in death metal.

The aftershocks can still be felt. On Jan 27, the band will raise the tempo once again with a performance at Star Live.

Since In Flames formed in Gothenburg in 1990, it has sold more than 2 million records worldwide. Reroute to Remain in 2002 and The Soundtrack to Your Escape in 2004 continued to prove the power of the band.

With the current lineup including Bjorn Gelotte on guitar, Daniel Svensson on drums, Peter Iwers on bass, Jesper Stromblad on guitar and Anders Friden doing the vocals, the band’s upcoming performance is their first in China.

“The band represents the highest level of death metal music in the world so we want to introduce them to fans in China,” says Jiang Wei, organizer of Guitar China, a local promoter of live music, which also brought in Swedish heavy metal bands Arch Enemy last year and Dark Tranquility in 2008.

“Live house venues are blossoming around the country. We arranged those performances both for diehard fans and new fans to diversify the live music scene in Beijing.”

According to Jiang, a limited edition of their latest album, A Sense of Purpose, will be imported and made available to fans.
