2007年，因上一张专辑《The Silent Force》而成功打入主流的Symphonic Metal/Rock乐队Within Temptation在Roadrunner旗下推出了《The Heart Of Everything》专辑。
在音乐色彩上，《The Heart Of Everything》明显不同于《The Silent Force》，这源于成员们自身的一些想法。
吉他手Robert Westerholt说：“我们一直尽力把每首歌做得最好，而且要比以前更有力。不像上一张专辑那样，管弦乐有些喧宾夺主，几乎挤掉了吉他和鼓的位置。这次，我们把吉他放到了更显要的位置，并加入了更多riff。我们的音乐依旧具有宏大感，你依旧可以听到很多古典的段落，但这并没有削弱它的力度。”
主唱Sharon den Adel说，在演唱方面，她没有像上张那样以清澈、飘渺的嗓音演唱，相反，她尝试在每一首歌中运用不同的嗓音。
另一个改变则是音乐的创作者。或许是因为上一张专辑中Sharon den Adel谱写的《Memories》获得了好评，新专辑超过半数的歌曲由Sharon主导创作，这也是令歌迷没有想到的。
这些新的想法让《The Heart Of Everything》更加地凝重、大气、多元。尽管歌迷对这张专辑褒贬不一，它还是成为了Within Temptation商业上最成功的一张。
这一次，Roadrunner打算把Within Temptation带出欧陆，因此《The Heart Of Everything》成了他们首张在美国发行的专辑。为了把这支大西洋彼岸的乐队介绍给新市场，Roadrunner把取自《The Silent Force》专辑的经典曲目《Stand My Ground》作为专辑中的第11首歌放在了美国版《The Heart Of Everything》的《All I Need》和《The Truth Beneath The Rose》之间。
最终，《The Heart Of Everything》在欧洲各国受到了欢迎，在美国却未能打进Top100——考虑到美国唱片市场的商业味比欧洲浓得多，这实在是意料之中的事情。
商业上的追求没有导致Within Temptation的音乐成为过眼云烟，相反，《The Heart Of Everything》比他们任何一张专辑都更注重整体的概念与内涵。上一张专辑《The Silent Force》的每首歌都与荷兰作家Louis Couperus的作品有关，但这只是一个文字游戏，而《The Heart Of Everything》则有一个明确的主题。
Sharon说：“专辑的主题是：你的一生中哪样东西最重要？你把什么当作你生命的核心？这也就是专辑名称’The Heart of Everything’的含义。我们在生活中往往面临各种各样的抉择。这张专辑讲述的正是信仰、牺牲与取舍。”
我不知道”抉择”对于Within Temptation来说意味着什么，什么才是他们眼中的核心。但我想起了10年前，Robert和Sharon放弃工作，开启全职音乐人生涯的抉择。
Sharon在另一次采访中说：“我们不是要通过这张专辑告诉乐迷我们眼中最重要的东西，而是把这问题留给他们，让人们自己去思考。”
读遍整张专辑的歌词，Within Temptation为我们展示了人生中最艰难的抉择：国家间的战争与和平；爱情的持续与破裂；面对压迫的反抗与屈服；恋人间的真诚与谎言……或许读懂了这些”抉择”的故事，我们才会找到“万物的核心”。
我们不妨从专辑封面入手。蒙着眼睛的女士无疑是正义女神(Lady Justice)的形象，她象征着为人们选择重要事物的天枰(传统的正义女神形象手里都持着天枰)。封面上的正义女神右手托着珠宝，左手托着鸽子，似乎象征着物质与精神间的抉择。

《The Howling》是整张专辑中最容易令人联想到专辑封面的一首歌——正义女神手中的珠宝与鸽子，恰好象征了战争(以掠夺财富为目的)与和平间的抉择。歌曲的MV大概也是这个意思，一面是绿草如茵的家园，一边是战火纷飞的废墟；蝴蝶与毒蝎；女孩与幽灵……无不形成了鲜明的对比。
尽管歌词中的“我们”在这场战役战役似乎处于守势，但这首歌主要反映的是对发起战争的反思。
《The Howling》的MV还有一个版本，是给网游”魔咒编年史”做广告，同样成为该游戏插曲的还有专辑中的B-Side曲目《Sound Of Freedom》。对于这个版本，乐迷普遍不太喜欢，毕竟这样的商业行为对一支金属乐队来说多少超出了合理的范畴。

《what Have You Done》是Within Temptation最受争议的一首歌了，歌词表现的是爱情破裂时的挣扎，两个版本的MV亦是如此。歌曲请来了来自美国的Life Of Agony的主唱Keith Caputo与Sharon对唱——正如大家所听到的，这个身材矮小的家伙有着极具爆发力的嗓音(声音很像Linkin Park的Chester Bennington)。激烈的吉他编配和Caputo” What have you done now?!”的怒吼交织在一起，若不是Sharon的声音一次次出现，我们真的很难把这首歌与Within Temptation联系起来——这也就是歌曲的争议焦点，它的确是一首很Rock的歌，但却不像是Within Temptation的作品。

《Frozen》是刚刚为人父母的Robert与Sharon为社会上虐待儿童现象写下的一首歌。歌曲和MV讲述的是同一个故事：母亲目睹了丈夫一次次地虐待女儿却无能为力，最终忍无可忍，下毒杀死了丈夫。
虽然歌中一次又一次地唱着”What Can I Do?”，但显然乐队还是相信自己可以做些什么的——Within Temptation把歌曲《Frozen》提供给了国际儿童求助热线(Child Helpline International)，并且把《Frozen》的单曲销售收入全部用于资助这个组织。

Sharon与Robert在看过电影《勇敢的心》之后创作了这首《The Heart Of Everything》。
《勇敢的心》讲述的是苏格兰英雄威廉•华莱士的传奇人生。13世纪，英王爱德华为了笼络贵族，下令英国贵族享有苏格兰少女的初夜权。华莱士的未婚妻梅伦被英军杀害。怒不可遏的华莱士率领饱受压迫的苏格兰人民揭竿而起。苏格兰的贵族表面上支持华莱士，实际上都为自己的利益打着小算盘，英王派王妃伊莎贝拉与华莱士和谈，而伊莎贝拉却与华莱士坠入爱河。最终，华莱士掉进了圈套，被处以死刑。但他的遗志依旧激励着苏格兰人民英勇抗争。

《Hand Of Sorrow》的灵感源于Sharon读过的一部小说《刺客正传II：皇家刺客(Royal Assassin)》。书中的主人公——身怀绝技的刺客蜚滋被六大公国委以对抗红船劫匪的重任，为了忠诚的许诺，他不得不放弃与爱人厮守的幸福。
在歌词中，我们能看到刺客对幸福破灭的痛苦之情，也能看到他对爱人的歉疚，音乐也用恢宏而悲伤的旋律谱写着悲情英雄的史诗。命运把蜚滋摆在了忠诚与爱情之间，让他不得不面对令人肝肠寸断的艰难抉择。

关于这首歌的内容，我看到一种解释说它叙述的是“乐队成员间的摩擦”，这应该是对Sharon一段访谈的误读。《The Cross》是一首普通的情歌。
《The Cross》是Sharon本人比较偏爱的一首，这与它的创作过程有关。一开始，Sharon和Martijn在为《The Cross》编曲时，曾尝试着用一种极快的节奏来编配，但它实在是太快了，吉他手在演奏时很难跟上，因此他们不得不把以前的编配付之一炬。Sharon又尝试了一种厚重而缓慢的方案，但也没能成功。总之，这首歌的编配足足拖了一年，就在录音工作结束前的几周，Sharon和Martijn才找到了最适当的节奏和氛围，搞定了编曲工作。

《Final Destination》则与系列惊悚电影《Final Destination》有着关联，中文译作《死神来了》。在查找这部影片资料时，我发现我居然看过它的第三部，尽管我对片名没有一点印象。
电影《Final Destination》每一部都是差不多的意思，主人公发现一些奇怪的迹象暗示着主要人物将一个接一个惨死，而死亡原因也在迹象中有所暗示。无论这些人如何努力，都无法逃脱死神的安排。
这首歌表现的也是这种恐惧感与宿命感，尽管厄运形影不离，主人公还是在不断尝试着逃脱，尽管绝望已漫上她的心头。

Within Temptation在现场表演这首歌时，大屏幕上悬着达•芬奇的名作《维特鲁威人》(Vitruvian Man)。因为这首歌写的就是《达芬奇密码》。表现了守卫”圣杯”秘密的郇山隐修会(Priory of Sion)成员的使命感和负罪感的冲突。不管是小说还是电影，看过《达芬奇密码》的朋友应该不少，我就不多做介绍了。

《The Heart Of Everything》是一张拥有明确主题的专辑，而Within Temptation似乎还想在这条路上走得更远。08年底，Robert在采访中透露：“我们的新专辑很有可能是一张概念专辑——当然一切还都没有确定，不过我们正在往这个方向尝试。”
